Baden-Baden, Germany

When the Advent season opens, Christmas markets also crop up in nearly every German town, large or small. The town squares are lit up and buzzing with activity during this time. Townspeople gather together, listen to brass band music, and enjoy the hearty traditional fare of the region. Vendors peddle baked goods, including gingerbread hearts, sugar-roasted almonds, crepes, cookies, stollen, cotton candy and other sweets. Christmas tree decorations, seasonal items, and handcrafted articles are also sold.

Christmas markets date back to at least the 14th century and were one of the many markets held throughout the year. It was here that people bought everything they needed for the Christmas celebration: baking moulds, decorations, candles, and toys for the children. In fact, until well into the 20th century, the Weihnachstmärkte were the only place for people to buy such seasonal items.

Markets differ from place to place; each has its own regional imprint. The market at Aachen, for instance, is known for its gingerbread men. The regions around the mountain range are famous for their handmade wooden crafts. Augsburg has a life-sized Advent calendar and opens the holiday season with its famous "Angel Play." At the Frankfurt Christmas Market, visitors will find almond cookies. This year we went to Baden-Baden because it was open until the 27 of December.

Each time a unique experience!

Bad Homburg with exquisite Baroque-influenced architecture and the huge Kurpark (spa garden) is a destination for a family walk every year after Christmas, we have done this many years and each time is a unique experience. Located at the foot of the Taunus mountains , this place is an extremely popular spot for a walk. For centuries Bad Homburg has been home to celebrity visitors, princes, kings and queens, writers and czars, all looking for a bit of relaxation and recuperation in its amazing natural springs, it is one place we seem never to be tired of in Germany.

Quiche Lorraine

Smoked bacon is a traditional ingredient of the cuisine of Lorraine, France . It is used in various traditional dishes of the region, including the famous quiche lorraine. Here it is the the recipe of the quiche that mom did today and it it featured in the photo above. Ingredients 1 Brisee pastry shell 4 large eggs 200 grams grated Emmental cheese 3/4 cup ham, diced 1 1/3 cups whipping cream (then add enough milk to bring up to 1 1/2 cups) 1/2 teaspoon salt Pinch of pepper 1 tsp. chives (ciboulet) Heat oven to 191 degrees Centigrade (375 F) Lay pie crust in quiche dish and form to dish. Poke holes in bottom and sides with a fork. Bake crust for 10-12 minutes (watch it so that if the crust slides down into dish you can push it back up while it is still maleable). Cool. Beat together eggs, milk, salt and pepper. Spread ham, then cheese onto bottom of baked pie crust. Sprinkle the ciboulet on. Pour milk mixture over the top. Bake for about 40 minutes (still at 191 C)....
